We have all stared down the road of life at one point or another wondering where in the world we are headed. I think we have all gotten used to getting in our cars “driving down the road” and having someone else (i.e. Siri) tell us where to go. We have lost our ability to self-navigate the journey we want to take in life.
What I have learned in the process of building this cookbook without any type of navigation system is that I fumbled, I floundered, went off the road, down in the ditch, around blinding curves, but somehow I was always able to get back on the road even if it was at a snail’s pace! The most important lesson from all of that reckless driving that I want to share with all of you is the power of three tiny words that will help you reach any destination you choose: 1 step forward!
Take one step each day that leads you in the direction you want to go – that simple (and that hard, all at the same time!). Sometimes my biggest step in a day is just to tackle the 5 ft. laundry pile. I know I’m aiming high! There will be more stories on the infamous laundry pile later, it’s the never ending nemesis that likes to taunt me on a weekly basis by sticking it’s tongue out at me and shouting “nana, nana, boo boo, you can’t catch me!”
Here is the thing. It is not always easy to even take 1 step. Trust me when I say that I know this from personal experience. You can sometimes just feel stuck. It feels like you are wearing snow boots trudging through the deepest of snow with the heaviest feet known to man and it literally takes every ounce of energy you have to even lift a foot. Other days, it can feel like you’re in flip-flops, or better yet barefoot, freely running with all the lightness of the world carrying you. I love those days!
What we all know is that each day is different. You have to innately trust that every step forward is just that, forward. It’s not backwards. No matter what it looks or feels like, trust with each step that you are taking yourself in the direction you “choose” to go. It’s your choice and solely in your hands as you cannot predict the journey of the other drivers on the road or the random animals that will dart out in front of you. Don’t blame any other person in your life for the road you are on. You are in the driver’s seat of your life moving one step forward.
