This whole year ahead for Sharing Our Life, Love and Food is all about giving back and saying thank you to everyone who has been a part of this endeavor; and I’d love for you to take a look at that concept of “giving back” in your own life as well. How we can all be of service for the greater good and honor those who help us along the way.
It’s about stepping outside of ourselves and really taking an up close and personal look at the people in our lives and telling them how much we appreciate them. I think it’s one of the best ways to lift yourself out of a “funk” too. It takes the focus off yourself and you can pour energy into what really matters in life…whole-hearted connection and community.
One of the ways of giving back is all about showing up for those who have touched our lives when they least expect it. Put yourself in their shoes and see how you might be able to help them and honor them in some way. I’m not talking grand gestures just something simple, a text, a phone call, a note in the mail…really any small gesture showing them you care. It’s not about doing it out of obligation, it’s operating from that space of love that comes from your heart and aligns with how you authentically feel about them and telling them so. If you do it from any other space, it will feel like drudgery and who wants that? It should be a natural extension of kindness that puts a spring in your step. A special lightness that overtakes your spirit and lifts you as high as a kite – it’s really that kind of free floating, exhilarating feeling, especially when you know it will be a pleasant surprise to them coming out of nowhere. This simple quote that a neighbor shared recently is a great reminder of this:
So riding on the curtails of Valentine’s Day yesterday and the concept of spreading love, I have been giving a lot of thought to a note a good friend sent a week ago. She poignantly pointed out and wrote something pretty special about friendship,
Here’s to many more wonderful years of finding beauty in each other and those around us.
Now if that’s not a quote, quote – I don’t know what is! Reading the words she wrote melted my heart. It couldn’t have been more beautifully stated and should be on a “Hallmark” card, don’t ya think?! To find the beauty in each other and those around us is the perfect mantra in friendship, for this mission of “giving back” and for life in general. This quote was just too good that I knew I had to share it with all of you. What a wonderful, wonderful way to operate in this world and what a gift this person has in seeing the world and the beauty in it and reminding us to take time to find it!
This notion of beauty recently popped up in the form of an email when an old friend sent the above pic of our kiddos from over a decade ago to another friend and I. She did it just to say, hey look at them now and remember them when… A yesteryear moment brought into the present that makes your heart skip a beat or two reminiscing of a time long ago.
How fun it was to take a stroll down memory lane and to have us each recall certain memories from that time in our lives. One of our friends pointed out that just looking at the picture made them happy from the inside out and then went on to say, “I don’t think we realized our friendship was something special at the time. As I age, I realize you two really added value to my life and I’m so thankful.” Now who doesn’t want a warm proverbial hug like that showing up like that on a Monday morning. Can’t think of a better way to start a week.
Now both of these friends are far across the country and I miss them like crazy but I don’t think the miles will ever stop our friendship and therein lies the beauty of it all. If you have people like that in your life, treasure them and maybe just like my friend did for us, send them your own “memory pic” of the good ‘ol days and brighten their day putting an imprint in their mind of just how much they mattered to you at that time and still do. That’s definitely one way to “find beauty” in each other.
Don’t you think that as time goes by that we so easily forget how pictures really are worth a thousand words. They have over the years, piled up in our hard drives, with barely a glance. I know for me, I so rarely print anything out anymore and easily forget those treasured times.
Combining those two thoughts of finding beauty in your friendships and in the people around you and then capturing those moments by a single click of a camera and sharing them is just “beauty” at its best. Makes me want to hop in my car and start singing Aerosmith’s, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”. There I go again, projecting my crazy love of “car singing” on y’all again…Not wanting to miss a thing is probably the very reason I love taking pictures so much and writing this blog post is reminding me that I have gotten away from taking pictures here lately and need to get back at it! I really don’t want to miss a thing…’cause the reality is that we all forget, we forget the impact people have made on us over the years…until we are jolted up out of our slumber by a simple pic…a simple reminder of “beauty” in our lives.
Thanks for the reminder friend just how special pictures really are and how they capture so much more than just a moment…They capture our hearts, our friendships, our memories, our feelings, our lives, our love…
I hope you will go find the beauty in all those around you and maybe one day soon take an afternoon and look back through pictures of lost memories and go share them to thank someone for the memory.
With Much Love
